How Successful is Your SharePoint Deployment?

by Anders B. Skjønaa (SharePointPeople.dk)

SharePointPeople comments;

AIIM confirm that the lack of a SharePoint strategy and governance is among biggest reason to SharePoint services failing.

AIIM says that the lack of Expertise is the biggest reason – which I personally think is a bit misleading. The lack of expertise, is the primary reason to why companies are missing the strategy and the well functioning governance practice, so they should not be compared like this. Both Strategy and Governance mandatory parts of the foundation on which your SharePoint deployment will stand.
Also user adoption is very much affected by the lack of strategy and governance. Users are not adopting anything if they don’t know the benefit.

Final comment; Strategy comes before Governance! I would even go as far as saying; If you don’t have a strategy for SharePoint – don’t bother implementing Governance. Yes – might be a bit harsh, but think of it. Governance is the practice of steering the entire SharePoint service; but if you don’t know the pace and the course, how do you know how to steer?

AIIM has released their latest report on SharePoint 2013 as well as a cool supporting infographic on deployment issues in SharePoint.

Defining a SharePoint Strategy is absolutely critical to the success of the platform. Upgrading to new versions of SharePoint without understanding what went wrong in the previous version is not going to solve your problems.  If you want to succeed, you have to do things you haven’t done before.  Are you addressing all the adoption critical success factors when choosing SharePoint as an enterprise tool?  If not, you will become one of these statistics…

    Anders, thanks for sharing, AIIM have put together a nice infographic. I am seeing the Sharepoint community exchange ideas more and more using the infographic format, here’s another good one:
