I recently learned about an important update for the User Profile Import Service Application – a troubled but yet important piece of technology close to the center of SharePoint Server 2010 technology. If you dont want to read thru the full article, I am going to give away the conclusion right away; If you are using importing User Profiles into SharePoint using FIM (ForeFront Identity Manager) you should deploy the February 2012 CU to your SharePoint environment!
If you are a bit worried, perhaps because you – like me – have felt a bit let down by the quality of CU’s in earlier days, I try to provide you with some short reasoning.
With the User Profile Service Application, we get the Sync Database used for managing updates to user profiles in SharePoint. But with imports using the version(s) of FIM – installed with SharePoint – there is no cleaning up the SyncDB after the import. This essentially means that the SyncDB can grow and continue growing until someone does something radical to stop it.
The suggested way to stop this growth, is to backup your Profile DB and Social DB, before deleting the User Profile Service Application completely from your system. Then you create a new User Profile Service Application and connect it to you existing databases. Now you can take a few days “off” before the SyncDB again grows too big and you will have to redo the whole procedure again.
But – with the Feb2012 CU, this issue has finally been resolved. This CU updates both FIM and the database so that it finally cleans up nicely after it self. I have not done any serious testing of this, but have gotten confirmation that it works very well. Below is the exact description – from Microsoft – of the fix in the CU:
“This hotfix package provides store procedures that clean up the Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) history tables during profile synchronization jobs.”
Great! So based on this; Deploying SharePoint Februar 2012 CU right away, to get a more manageable SharePoint service, seems like a really good idea!
